Background and Purpose 
In negotiations with Legal Aid British Columbia (LABC) and the Ministry of Attorney General, the Association of Legal Aid Lawyers (A.L.L.) secured new funding to support eligible members of A.L.L., who practice family law, to reduce the cost of specialized software. These tools support family law work such as producing accurate support calculations, providing detailed financial statements and family law management tasks. Examples include Divorcemate and DivorcePath.

Amount of Funding 
An eligible applicant may receive up to $1,200. The exact amount will depend on the number of applications. LABC’s total software payments will not exceed $156,000 in each fiscal year.

Eligibility 
To be recommended for funding, an “Eligible Lawyer” must meet all of the following requirements:

1. A practicing lawyer who is licensed and in good standing with the Law Society;
2. Be a member of A.L.L. and membership fees are paid for the current year (2026/27);
3. Have an active Vendor Number with LABC;
4. Not be subject to any conditions, suspension or remedial action pursuant to LABC’s Client Services Compliance Policy;
5. Has accepted at least 12 Standard Representation Contracts in the previous year - April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026; and
6. Provide proof of payment for an eligible family law software subscription.

Implementation 
Prior to January 1 of each fiscal year, A.L.L. will provide LABC with a list of eligible applicants who it recommends receive these payments. This list will include the names of the lawyers as well as the recommended amount payable to each lawyer, not to exceed the individual or aggregate maximum. Upon confirmation of each lawyers’ eligibility and proof of payment for software services, LABC will provide the list to A.L.L.
 
Payments will be subject to the General Terms and Conditions in place between LABC and applicants receiving the Software Grant.

​Structure of Funding 
The $156,000 annual fund can provide a maximum $1,200 payment to 130 applicants. If there are more than 130 applications the amount will be reduced proportionately, for example:

• 140 eligible applicants, approximately $1,114
• 150 eligible applicants, approximately $1,040

 
If fewer than 130 applicants apply, A.L.L. may recommend payments to A.L.L. members who accepted fewer than 12 Standard Family Contracts.
